The Role of a CoBM Minister

Within our community, the title “Minister” often brings up a question: What does a Church of Body Modification Minister actually do? Are they piercers? Are they tattoo artists?

The answer is simple: they are guides. A CoBM Minister’s purpose is not to answer the technical questions of a modification – that is the sacred role of your professional artist. An artist is your guide for the what and the how. A Minister is here to help you explore the why. They are a resource for the spirituality and the deep, personal essence of your rite.

Focusing the Intent

A Minister’s primary role is to act as a spiritual guide for individuals on their path. This is a deeply personal process that can take many forms.

Perhaps you feel a powerful pull towards a new modification, but the meaning behind it is still unclear. A Minister is a trusted ear, someone you can talk with to help uncover the intent that is waiting to be discovered. They can help you craft a personal ritual – a series of actions, words, or meditations – to perform before, during, or after your modification to focus your energy and solidify your purpose. They are here to help you build the vessel for your spiritual experience.

A Bridge Between Paths

A Minister is not expected to be an expert in every spiritual tradition on Earth. Their strength lies not in knowing everything, but in their ability to listen and understand. They are expected to have a wide range of personal experiences and knowledge, but more importantly, they can quickly identify and respect the spiritual significance of rituals from other paths, even if they are unfamiliar.

For example, a Minister may not be an expert on the rites of the Sufi Whirling Dervishes. However, upon learning about it, they should be able to immediately grasp the profound spiritual connection at play – the use of the body through dance to achieve a state of union with the divine, the symbolism of the planets, the letting go of the ego. It is this ability to see the sacred in a multitude of forms that makes them an effective guide.

Advocacy Through Education

Occasionally, a member’s path of spiritual modification may conflict with the policies of the outside world, such as with an employer or a school. In these situations, a Minister can serve as a vital source of support. It is important to state that Ministers do not provide legal advice. Instead, their role is to help you communicate and educate. They can offer guidance on how to articulate your sincerely held beliefs in a clear and respectful way, helping to bridge the gap of understanding with a party that may be infringing upon your rights.

A Sacred Trust

Being a CoBM Minister is a volunteer position of trust. There are no required “office hours” or time commitments, but Ministers are expected to be accessible to the community when called upon. This role requires a unique set of skills, all centered on holding space for another person’s journey. A Minister must be adept at listening without judgment and guiding without projecting their own beliefs. Their role is not to give you answers, but to help you find your own.

This sacred trust is formalized in our Code of Ethics, which every Minister agrees to uphold. It is the foundation upon which this entire relationship is built.

Ministers have also frequently acted as ambassadors for our community. While it is not a requirement of the role, they have often given interviews to news outlets like the BBC, ABC, CBS, and The Washington Post, and have been invited to speak at high schools and universities. They help to demystify our practices and present the spiritual side of body modification to the wider world with intelligence and grace.

Ultimately, a CoBM Minister is a dedicated, trusted member of the community who is here to help you navigate the spiritual side of your path, whenever you need them.
